EvCo  Committee on Events)

 

The Committee on Events represents the Educate pillar of our chapter, ensuring that the community is constantly in tune with local happenings by providing and creating programs and activities that educate communities of color on their social, political, and economic empowerment. EvCo also collaborates with UCSC student and multi-ethnic organizations to further the prosperity of BIPOC folx and students of color on and off the UC Santa Cruz campus.

Other responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Regular meetings with key community development partners (United Way; City Council; SUA; CADrc; Student Media; NAACP UC Santa Cruz: Communications Branch, CommCoord, PAC)

  • Developing and hosting events that bolster the Black agenda within Santa Cruz (City and County)

  • Collaborating with CommCoord Retention Task Force to:

    • Organize and recruit students to attend programming sponsored by the NAACP (Santa Cruz and NAACP UC Santa Cruz)

  • Scheduling a consistent pattern of meetings with local media sources (CHP, Santa Cruz Sentinel, local news stations, etc.)

  • Communicating with SUA and the Cultural Centers on campus on an agreed scheduled to hear the needs of the students on campus in order to develop events to support, bolster, and benefit students of color

Communications Branch

To have a dedicated coalition of writers, editors, artists, and correspondence that strives to: educate local communities and students on campus about City and County happenings; engage with local news and media sources on an agreed schedule and timeline; empower students of color on/off campus, as well as BIPOC folx in the community by sharing information via social media, infographics (printed when possible and digital), sources used for research, resources for support (fundraising, for example),

Responsibilities of the Communications Branch: 

​

  1. Seek to promote media content consistent with fundamental NAACP goals which include the elimination of racial isolation and fear and the furtherance of multiracial and cultural understanding.

  2. Monitor local and national media, especially advertising performance.

  3. Operate a speakers’ bureau for the benefit of the Units and for the benefit of organization on the campus and in the community desiring to make use of it. 

  4. Attempt to interest persons in charge of local news media on conditions affecting minority groups.

  5. Working with EvCo VP and Communications Director to strategize publicity

    1. Final decisions made by EvCo VP with Communications Director advisory

The mission of the NAACP Youth & College Division is to inform youth of the problems affecting racial and ethnic minorities; to advance the economic, education, social and political status of racial and ethnic minorities and their harmonious cooperation with other peoples; to stimulate an appreciation of the African Diaspora and other people of color’s contribution to civilization; and to develop an intelligent, militant effective youth leadership.
