Community Action Network

Welcome to our Newsletter!

We hope that the Summer is going well for y’all and that y’all are finding yourselves in a safe spot and in good health! We would like to thank all of you for taking the time to attend the Forum on Racial Injustice with the UCSC NAACP. We invite y'all to read the Community Action Network (CAN) newsletters, which will provide information for wanting to get involved, or to be up to date, with the UCSC NAACP in our fight for racial justice. We hope that our upcoming networks and direct action events can help y’all in our fight for a Black Agenda in Santa Cruz, and throughout the state, nation, and the world.

Here's the zoom recording from our Forum on Racial Injustice (FRIJ) if you missed out! The purpose of FRIJ event was to have a candid conversation with Santa Cruz leadership about the harassment, policing, use of excessive force, and other manifestations of anti-Black sentiment in the Santa Cruz community.

Community Action Network (CAN)

Purpose of CAN:

The purpose of CAN is to organize local community allies, advocates, organizations, and POC/non-POC supporters in mobilizing UCSCNAACPefforts (such as striking, direct actions and protests).

The Community Action Network will be split between three teams that will work together and mutually in order to push for demands and efforts for POC and Black communities.

About CAN:

Advocacy Team

Joining our UCSCNAACPCAN Advocacy Team is the best way community members can stay engaged, as we also rely on allies to communicate with us on happenings in the local community (like civil and human rights violations) that we should be aware of, or that needs the attention of the UCSCNAACP. The Advocacy Team will focus on participating in demonstrations and direct actions in protest and celebration events that advocates for Black/POC communities, and meeting with local stakeholders to promote the Black Agenda in Santa Cruz.

Research Team The UCSC NAACP CAN Research Team will engage in data-driven research and policy analysis in order to clarify policy tools through quantitative and qualitative information. This team will also assist in providing effective change by explaining the causes and consequences of political action or inaction. Emphasis will be placed on the incorporation of evidence-based practice which integrates research findings into solutions and demands concerning issues that are faced in Black, POC, and marginalized communities.

Visuals Team The Visuals Team will focus on enhancing the cultural climate of the Santa Cruz community and nearby areas by celebrating diversity and engaging in activism. This team will also be responsible for distributing infographics, and providing graphic designs in order to put the research and data collected on paper so civic and community engagement could be encouraged in local direct actions and campaigns. This team will also potentially be in constant communication with the Communications Department when it comes to releasing UCSC NAACP related videos and content in our social media.

Information Campaign in Santa Cruz

Please join UCSC NAACP in conducting a letter/call and information campaign, which seeks to pressure the County and the City Government to defund and divest budget funds from the Police Department.

The Community Action Network and Advocates can help by calling and emailing the City Council and the Board of Supervisors of Santa Cruz County to defund and divest budget funds from SCPD and reallocate to education, houselessness, health, and community development.

The County Board of Supervisors Budget Hearing will meet June 22 at 9:00AM and engage the community in an open discussion about the Budget. Another time is set for a public hearing, concerning the 2020-21 Proposed Budget at 7:30PM as well. This date will be really imperative in getting the Community to demand Santa Cruz County to prioritize healthcare, education, houselessness, affordable housing, community development and economic development in POC/black-owned businesses. The County Board of Supervisors will continue these hearings until June 30th. Other dates include: June 23rd at 9:00AM and 7:00PM,  and June 30th at 9:00AM and 1:30PM.

  • The Agenda for the upcoming Board of Supervisors meeting can be located here.

  • According to the County of Santa Cruz Website, the Board meets in the Board of Supervisors Chambers, 701 Ocean Street, Room 525.

  • Upcoming SC County Events will also be updated here

The Santa Cruz City Council will also be meeting on June 23rd (public comment starts at 6PM), and they will be discussing the Proposed Budget for FY 2020-21. It would be imperative for us to show out, call in and advocate for the defunding of the Police Department and for the Black Agenda. The Santa Cruz City Council have pushed the vote for the City Budget to July 2. The time is currently tentative for this date.
